Course description

Climate change significantly affects the water cycle and water resource management, altering precipitation patterns, increasing the frequency of extreme events, raising the risks of floods and droughts, and affecting the availability of freshwater. This has consequences for public health, the economy, agriculture, and ecosystems. The EU implements a comprehensive water resources policy, in particular through the Water Framework Directive and the Floods Directive, which regulate sustainable water management and flood risk management. The EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change and the Climate-ADAPT platform are also important instruments. Ukraine faces systemic environmental problems, including inadequate environmental control. Flood risk management is carried out at the basin level in accordance with European approaches. Modern forecasting methods are based on mathematical modeling of runoff and the use of spatial data. Local initiatives, in particular the Covenant of Mayors, play an important role in increasing the resilience of communities to climate change.
