Course description

The course “Introduction to Climate Change” is part of the professional Professional Development Programme.

The main goal of the course is to develop in students — including employees of hydrometeorological centers, agricultural advisory services, and related institutions — the professional competencies necessary for effective work with climate data and the provision of modern climate services. Special attention is paid to practical aspects: the organization, storage, and processing of climate time series; working with databases; executing queries; and ensuring data quality and accessibility.

The course is aimed at bridging the gap between primary meteorological observations and their applied use in climate services for climate-dependent sectors of the economy. Students learn methods for obtaining and integrating climate data from various sources and numerical models, with the subsequent creation of climate products tailored to the needs of end users.

The course also covers approaches to developing information products for assessing climate risks — such as droughts, heat waves, frosts, hailstorms, dust storms, and sudden temperature changes — as well as supporting sectoral decision-making and climate change adaptation.
