The Second International Research-to-Practice Conference “Climate Services: Science and Education” was held on 16–18 April 2025 in Odesa, at Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, Faculty of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Science. The event was dedicated to the development of climate services, climate education, adaptation to climate change, and the practical use of scientific knowledge to support decision-making in climate-sensitive economic sectors.
The conference brought together Ukrainian and international researchers, lecturers, representatives of the hydrometeorological service, higher education institutions, research institutions, public authorities, civil society, and specialists interested in the practical implementation of climate services. The conference was held on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University and became an important platform for the exchange of experience among the scientific, educational, and professional communities.
The conference programme included a plenary session, oral presentations, poster presentations, training sessions, and thematic round-table discussions. The main areas of work covered climate services in climate-sensitive economic sectors, education in climate services, climate risk assessment, adaptation to climate change at regional and local levels, water resources management, agrometeorological risks, the urban environment, air quality, public health, green infrastructure, and the use of digital tools for climate services.
Special attention was paid to the role of universities in training specialists capable of working with climate data, interpreting climate information, and applying it to the needs of different sectors. The conference presented educational courses, student initiatives, citizen science projects, approaches to developing green skills among young people, and opportunities for integrating climate services into educational programmes.
An important component of the conference was a series of special events held within the framework of international Erasmus+ projects. In particular, within the CLUVEX project, a round-table discussion was held on raising young people’s awareness of climate change and developing green skills. Within the ClimEd project, a discussion was held on bridging the gap between climate service providers and the needs of climate-dependent sectors. Within the SUNRISE project, participants also discussed the development of the INTENSE Doctoral School, as well as challenges and prospects for training young researchers in Ukraine.
A separate emphasis was placed on the Living Labs approach as a tool for combining science, education, innovation, and the practical needs of communities. Participants considered the possibilities of using living labs to address real problems in the urban environment, strengthen interaction between universities, communities, and stakeholders, and develop practice-oriented climate education.
The conference contributed to strengthening international and inter-university cooperation, disseminating the results of the ClimEd, CLUVEX, SUNRISE, and GROMADA projects, and forming a professional community capable of developing climate services in Ukraine in line with current scientific, educational, and societal needs.
