Home Events Conference “Climate Services 2021”

The International Research-to-Practice Conference “Climate Services: Science and Education” was held on 22–24 September 2021 in Odesa, at Odesa State Environmental University. The event was dedicated to current issues related to the development of climate services, climate education, adaptation to climate change, and the use of scientific knowledge to support decision-making in climate-sensitive economic sectors.

The conference brought together researchers, lecturers, representatives of the hydrometeorological service, higher education institutions, international organizations, and practitioners interested in the implementation of climate services in Ukraine and beyond. Participants presented research results, educational initiatives, and practical approaches aimed at increasing the resilience of society, the economy, and territorial communities to current and future climate risks.

The conference programme included plenary sessions, oral presentations, a poster session, and special events. The topics covered issues of climate services in climate-sensitive economic sectors, the development of education in climate services, climate risk assessment, regional and local aspects of climate change adaptation, the use of satellite data, modelling, indicators of extreme weather events, and scenarios of future climate change.

Special attention was paid to the training of specialists in climate services and the integration of modern approaches to climate education into educational programmes. The conference provided an opportunity to discuss the development of training courses, online education, inter-university cooperation, and the preparation of students to work with climate information, data, and services.

An important component of the event was a series of special discussion sessions, including the round-table discussion “Bridging the Gap between Provision Climate Services and Needs of Climate-Dependent Sectors”, organized within the framework of the Erasmus+ ClimEd project. The discussion addressed interaction between climate service providers and users from different economic sectors, barriers to the wider use of climate services, the needs of end-users, and ways to increase the practical value of climate information.

The conference served as a platform for the exchange of research findings, educational experience, and practical developments in the field of climate services. It contributed to strengthening cooperation between Ukrainian and international partners, developing the professional community in climate services, and disseminating the results of the Erasmus+ ClimEd and INTENSE educational projects.
