From October 26 to November 12, 2021, the third online training on digital tools and databases for climate education was held under the Erasmus+ ClimEd project “Multi-level education and vocational training on climate services, adaptation to climate change, and mitigation at the regional and local levels” (619285-EPP-1-2020-1-FI-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP). Forty-five representatives from Ukrainian partner universities and associated partners of the ClimEd project participated in the training.
The training began with a series of lectures given from October 26-28, 2021, by Professors Svitlana Krakovská from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute; Larisa Sogacheva, Antti Mäkelä, Putian Zhou, and Alexander Makhura from the University of Helsinki (Finland); Villa Tomas Galenko from Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic); Igor Esau from the Nansen Center for Environmental Research and Remote Sensing (Norway); and Inna Khomenko from the Odessa State Environmental University. The lecture materials covered the following topics: The regional focus of the IPCC Assessment Report in the context of Ukraine, Remote sensing and satellite observations, Climate-related datasets, UGMI activities to support climate research, Global-scale climate modeling, Climate modeling tools, Regional-scale climate modeling, Observations of climate variables, and Urban-scale modeling for climate applications.
Over the next two weeks in November 2021, groups of 3-4 participants each completed homework assignments in the form of individual and group projects. A total of 12 groups (C1-C12) worked on the development and implementation of small-scale research projects in the fields of agriculture, energy, engineering design and construction, urban management, water resources management, and health. This work made extensive use of the ClimEd project distance learning system, technically supported by OGEK staff.
On November 12, 2021, each group presented their projects. Following the assessment, the groups received certificates of successful completion of the ClimEd training, recognizing their learning outcomes, equivalent to 3 ECTS credits. All training materials (slides and video recordings of lectures, presentations of homework assignments in the form of group projects) are available at page.
