Course description

One of the major consequences of climate change is the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme natural phenomena. In the hydrological cycle, this is manifested in the form of catastrophic floods of various origins, as well as prolonged periods of low runoff caused by hydrological droughts. In recent years, under the influence of global and regional climate change, a redistribution of water resources has been observed in Ukraine and other countries. In particular, spring flood runoff is decreasing, leading to reduced low-flow discharge; at the same time, the probability of local catastrophic rainfall-induced floods in rivers remains. In this context, an important objective in the training of specialists is to ensure familiarity with and mastery of modern computational and forecasting methods for estimating maximum and minimum river runoff, taking into account the impacts of climate change. This enables a probabilistic assessment of climatic and related hydrological risks in water management and highlights this field as one of the priority areas for economic development in Ukraine and worldwide.
