module #3 — Climate-Sensitive Infectious Diseases;
14 video lectures; practical works/homework assignments, including a concept map, case analysis, scenario planning, and a mini-project;
3 intermediate module tests and 1 final test.

Course description

The course “Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Climate Change in Health Care” provides a systematic and applied overview of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies with a particular focus on the health care sector. The course examines how global and regional climate change affects population health through heat stress, changes in the dynamics of infectious diseases, air quality, mental health, and extreme weather events.

Special attention is paid to the effects of climate factors on pathogens, vectors, reservoir hosts, and vulnerable population groups, as well as to the analysis of climate information, health risk assessment, development of adaptation strategies, and intersectoral cooperation between health care, environmental, and climate service systems. The course integrates practical tools, including Knowledge Boxes, which support in-depth analysis of specific pathogens, climate-sensitive risks, and opportunities for micro-interventions at the level of health care facilities and communities.

After completing the course, learners will be able to analyse links between climate factors and epidemiological trends, assess the risks of emergence or changes in the endemicity of infectious diseases, identify the health sector’s needs for climate information and services, and propose evidence-based measures to strengthen prevention, monitoring, and control of climate-sensitive infections.
