ClimEd Training №5: Blended and Online Learning for Climate Education

From 30 September to 4 October 2024, the fifth training course, “Applying Different Technologies of Blended/Online Learning in Education,” was held within the Erasmus+ ClimEd project. The event took place in a hybrid format at the Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu and focused on the application of modern blended and online learning technologies in climate education.

The training brought together 34 representatives of Ukrainian universities and partner institutions, including Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, O. M. Beketov National University of Urban Economy in Kharkiv, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Bila Tserkva National Agrarian University, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, and the National University “Odesa Maritime Academy.”
The programme covered climate policy, the integration of digital technologies into the educational process, the development of blended learning modules, the use of Moodle for creating online courses and examination tasks, as well as innovative approaches to teaching climate change, adaptation, and climate services.
Lectures and practical sessions were delivered by experts from the Estonian University of Life Sciences, the University of Helsinki, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, and Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture.

Special attention was paid to group work. The participants prepared and presented eight small-scale research projects dedicated to assessing urban vulnerability to climate change, the impact of greenhouse gases, the use of Moodle in climate education, adaptation planning, floods, paleoclimatology, and other relevant topics.
Upon completion of the training, the participants received certificates corresponding to 3 ECTS credits. The training evaluation demonstrated a high level of participant satisfaction: all respondents positively assessed the quality of the materials, the work of the lecturers, the organisation of the training, and their readiness to recommend similar trainings to colleagues.

The training became an important stage in the implementation of WP5 Staff Capacity Building and contributed to strengthening the capacity of Ukrainian universities to develop modern, interactive, and practice-oriented educational products in the field of climate services, climate change adaptation, and mitigation.
