International Conference on “Climate Services: Science and Education”

On 16–18 April 2025, Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University hosted the Second International Research-to-Practice Conference on “Climate Services: Science and Education.” It was the second conference in the field of climate services, continuing the traditions of Odessa State Environmental University.

The conference was held in a hybrid format, under the auspices of three European educational projects. The first, ClimEd, is dedicated to building education on climate services, climate change adaptation and mitigation for public, sectoral and municipal structures in Ukraine. The second, CLUVEX, focuses on strengthening climate competencies, environmental awareness, and green skills through international virtual exchanges that connect students, researchers, and artists. The third, SUNRISE, continues the work of the INTENSE project with the formation and development of a doctoral school in environmental sciences. The conference was also conducted with the support of the GROMADA project, dedicated to the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

A total of 198 experienced and young scientists from 11 countries (USA, Estonia, Denmark, Spain, Benin, Guinea, Switzerland, Armenia, Finland, Italy, etc.) took part in the conference.

The conference was dedicated to discussing the most important and urgent issues facing climatology and environmental experts. At the plenary sessions and workshops, participants explored ways to strengthen cooperation between various economic sectors to ensure sustainable human development, adapt society to inevitable climate change, and achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Reports were presented by prominent representatives of climate and meteorological science in Ukraine and Europe, including one current and two former representatives of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.

On 16–17 April, three round tables were held:

  • “Bridging the Gap between Provision of Climate Services and the Needs of Climate-Dependent Sectors” (Erasmus+ project ClimEd), aimed at involving representatives of climate-dependent economic sectors and the public in addressing urgent climate challenges.
  • “Fostering Climate Change Awareness and Cultivating Green Skills among Youth for a Sustainable Future” (Erasmus+ project CLUVEX), dedicated to raising awareness and empowering youth.
  • “Development of the INTENSE Doctoral School: Experience, Challenges, and Perspectives in Ukraine” (Erasmus+ project SUNRISE), focused on ensuring sustainability and effective use of project deliverables for universities, students, and academic staff.
